TBSLSC provides coaches and offers training and lifeguarding support in beach safety for the ages of 8 upwards.
This covers awareness of local environments and potential dangers, awareness of waves and how to be safe in different swell conditions, how to use tubes and rescue boards to be effective in carrying our safer rescues, and training in first aid used in beach lifesaving.
Lifeguards
TBSLSC provides a Graduate LIfeguard Programme that aims to prepare the candidate for the SLSGB NVBLQ or Surf Lifeguard award, which can be assessed on or after the candidates 16th birthday.
The full award content encourages the Graduates to learn, practice and develop over an extended period of time to ensure that Lifesaving skills are fully embedded before final Lifeguard assessments are undertaken. The award also aims to help prevent drowning through peer to peer education and training within the Graduates community.
The Graduate Lifeguard Programme will help to develop and prepare the candidate for patrolling as part of the SLSGB National Patrol Framework and club search and rescue capability.
IRB Training
TBSLSC operate Arancia IRBs. This a very versatile type of inshore boat and they are used for preventative patrols as well as rescue work by trained IRB drivers and crew.
The driver and crew are always qualified lifeguards and undertake advanced training at TBSLSC to effect rescues that are often within the surf environment or close to rocks, piers and other dangers.
The training will include bringing the boat alongside casualty in heavy surf, and where the boat cannot get that close, the crew is trained to swim to the casualty and recover back to the IRB.
This can be very challenging for both the rescue swimmer and the driver who manages the IRB on their own often in heavy surf.
